For many of you, this may be the first blog you have read. If so, this post will explain what it is you are looking at and how to utilize the many features of blogs in general. The image below is what the main page of my blog looks like (I am using Firefox as my browser, IE looks identical). The numbers displayed in in the image correspond to the items below which describe each section in greater detail. If anything is still a mystery, email me or leave a comment at the end of the article and I will respond.

Main Title - Every blog has a name and most have a tagline. Both of these are displayed in the title banner area of the blog. The entire banner area is also a link to the main page of the blog. If after following links to stories on this blog, in the archives, for examples, you can return to the main page by clicking anywhere in the banner.
Main Blog Articles - The articles of the blog, its main content, is listed here. A blog typically displays a log of entries listed chronologically, the newest article listed first. Some longer articles only display a short beginning section with a link to the rest of the article. Clicking this link will open a page and display the entire article.
About Page - Most every blog has an About page that displays more information about the author of the page. The About page generally lists short biographical information, some interests, how to contact the author by email and what the focus of the blog will be. Also, on my blog as in others, I have a link on the main page to email me. The link will automatically launch your email program to send me an email.
Favorite Posts - This is a list of some of the most popular posts to this blog. Many blogs have a list like this. Browsing the favorite posts of a new blog is a good way to get an overview of the blog and see what kind of information is presented. If the blog is a political blog, you can quickly determine what kind of political leanings the author has from these posts.
Recent Comments - This is a list of the most recent comments posted by readers. Each link lists the commenter's name and the article to which his is commenting. Clicking on the commenter's link will bring you to their comment as well as the article to which the commenter commented on.
Comments - Listed at the end of each article on the main page you will find the date the article was posted, a 'Comments' link and a 'Permalink' link. If you follow the comments link you are taken to a page where you can read the comments posted by others and post comments yourself. These comments are visible to everyone and make the blog an extended conversation regarding the article in question. You can share your comments on the article or respond to a comments someone else has already left.
Permalink - All the articles posted in a month are listed on the first page of the blog. The 'Permalink' link (found next to the Comments link at the end of each article) is a permanent link at which the article can be found. This is helpful because the article will be archived at the end of the month. The permanent link is helpful if you wish to quote this article in a blog of your own or even in a scholarly paper. The permalink is good because no matter how a blog is reorganized, that link will always be good.
Daily Reads - The links below the heading Daily Reads and General (and others below) are my blogroll. A blogroll is a collection of links of other blogs that are read or recommended by the author. The blogroll is also a personal collection and gives the reader some idea of what the author is like by the blogs he reads. In the same way you can tell a lot from someone's CD collection, the same may be divined by one's blogroll.
Feeds Links - There are estimated to be over 2 million blogs in existence. With so many, feeds were created to allow software programs to aggregate feeds from many sites into a sort of playlist or digest that is automatically updated. The three kinds of feeds my site broadcasts, RSS 1.0, RSS 2.o, and Atom are listed here as graphical links. Below those links is a graphical link to Typepad, the hosting company of my blog which I highly recommend.
