Questions & Answers regarding the movie Once

Once_main So you loved the movie Once. I did as well. I have compiled a bunch of information about the movie, the actors, the music and some lingering questions I had into this clearinghouse.

What are the two main characters' names?
They didn't have names. I'm not kidding. When the credits roll, the two main characters list 'Guy' and 'Girl' next to their names. IMDB also lists them this way and that is also how other critics refer to them in their reviews. It's a small detail but it helps sustain the simplicity of the story.

Where have I seen the Guy before? What was he in before 'Once'?
The 1991 movie The Commitments. Synopsis: A wry bunch of struggling musicians form "World's Hardest Working Band," The Commitments, and bring soul music to the people of Dublin, Ireland.

What more can you tell me about the Guy?
His name is Glen Hansard and he is a members of the popular Irish band The Frames. Other than his appearance in The Commitments, he is not an actor by trade but a musician. While most Americans would not recognize him for his music, The Frames are very popular in Ireland.

What can you tell me about the Girl?
Her name is Marketa Irglova and she is 19 years old (she was 17 while they were filming). She grew up in the Czech Republic. She is a gifted musician in her own right. She and Glen Hansard put out an album in 2006 called 'The Swell Season' which features many of the same songs found on the 'Once' soundtrack.

How long have they known each other?
They met in 2001 when The Frames traveled to a music festival in the Czech Republic. Marketa's parents threw a party for the visiting musicians. Hansard kept in touch and continued to visit and they began to write songs together. In 2005, she went to Ireland where they collaborated in writing the songs that would become their release, "The Swell Season." [See article in Premier]

Out_at_the_sea Who wrote the songs in the movie?
Both Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová wrote the songs. Whether the movie inspired the music or the other way around is difficult to tell. As Flashes of Panic parenthetically wrote: "some of the songs are longtime Frames songs, some are from Hansard and Iglova’s collaboration, “The Swell Season,” and some may have been written for the movie—but it’s not clear which are which."

Do they perform together?
Yes. They are doing some performance dates together in July and August. Check the Once - The Movie myspace page for exact dates and details.

Where can I find lyrics to the songs in Once?
All the songs' lyrics can be found on my blog:
http://blog.mccannta.com/mccannta/2007/06/lyrics-for-song.html.

The chemistry between the two stars looked real. Are Glen Hansard and Markta Irglova dating?
Yes. ''I had been falling in love with her for a long time, but I kept telling myself she's just a kid,'' says Hansard, 37, who has known his 19-year-old costar for the past six years. (The two are now dating.) ''There was definitely the feeling we were documenting something precious and private.''

Where can I find guitar chords for these songs?
I have had a tough time finding chords for these songs. When I find them, I will post links for them here.

[**SPOILER**] In the scene by the sea, what did she say in Czech in reply to him asking if she still loves her husband?
I have heard that she replies in Czech "It is you that I love." How sweet is that?

[**SPOILER**]Still_at_piano Who bought the piano for the Girl at the end of the movie?
Initially, I didn't give it much thought. I assumed that the Guy bought it from the music store. I'm still fairly sure that is what happened but I come across some posts where it has been suggested that her husband may have bought the piano for her. The piano was definitely used and was not the quality of other pianos in the music store. Maybe the husband realized how much her music meant to her and bought it as a token of his support and affection. Nothing is for sure, but it is an alternative that has some merit. Do you have a theory? Share it as a comment on this post...

Do you think the Guy will get back together with his old girlfriend?
I don't know but what do you think? Leave a comment on this post and share your thoughts about what you think will happen

How much did this movie cost to make?
$175,000 (US). It is likely the marketing costs will be 20-times  the production cost!. The movie has already grossed 15 times it's production cost as word of mouth is spreading.

Why was the movie rated 'R' is America?
Language. How fucking stupid is that?

Was Glen Hansard the first choice as the movie's lead?
No. Writer/Director John Carney initially had Irish actor Cillian Murphy (Batman Begins, Red Eye) in mind as the lead. When he dropped out, Carney then turned to his old friend and former Frames bandmate (Carney played bass for The Frames for years), Glen Hansard. Hansard was already working on the music, with Markéta Irglová, and fell into the roll naturally.

Is the 'car test' the recording engineer mentioned (listening to a final mix on a car stereo to compare with the studio monitors) a common practice among engineers?
Absolutely. Studio monitors are very distinctive and they can sometimes mask certain aspects of a mix. Listening to another pair of speakers that you are familiar with is a very important part of the mix process.

Did you notice that...

  • When she curses, she used the F-word almost exclusively, even when another curse word would have been more appropriate. I think this is an example of great writing. The Girl is an immigrant from Czechoslovakia and far from mastery in English, cursing or otherwise. The F-word is great because grammatically, it works in almost every situation.
  • The Girl's ridiculous outfits and men's blazers she wore? In the end, they did nothing to change how captivatingly attractive she was, if anything, it added to it.
  • The Girl is wearing super-large, fluffy slippers as she goes to buy batteries late and night and then walks home singing while wearing headphones.

Falling Slowly - Lyrics, from the movie 'Once'

Once_2 Falling Slowly, Lyrics by Glen Hansard & Marketa Irglova
Featured in the motion picture Once

I don't know you
But I want you
All the more for that
Words fall through me
And always fool me
And I can't react
And games that never amount
To more than they're meant
Will play themselves out

Take this sinking boat and point it home
We've still got time
Raise your hopeful voice you have a choice
You've made it now

Falling slowly, eyes that know me
And I can't go back
Moods that take me and erase me
And I'm painted black
You have suffered enough
And warred with yourself
It's time that you won

Take this sinking boat and point it home
We've still got time
Raise your hopeful voice you had a choice
You've made it now

Take this sinking boat and point it home
We've still got time
Raise your hopeful voice you had a choice
You've made it now
Falling slowly sing your melody
I'll sing along

If You Want Me - Lyrics, from the movie 'Once'

Once_2 If You Want Me, Lyrics by Glen Hansard & Marketa Irglova
Featured in the motion picture Once

Are you really here or am I dreaming
I can't tell dreams from truth
for it's been so long since I have seen you
I can hardly remember your face anymore

When I get really lonely
and the distance causes our silence
I think of you smiling
with pride in your eyes a lover that sighs

If you want me satisfy me, if you want me satisfy me
If you want me satisfy me, if you want me satisfy me

Are you really sure that you’d believe me
when others say I lie
I wonder if you could ever despise me
when you know I really try
to be a better one to satisfy you
For your everything to me
and I’ll do what you ask me
if you’ll let me be, free

If you want me satisfy me, if you want me satisfy me
If you want me satisfy me, if you want me satisfy me
If you want me satisfy me, if you want me satisfy me

When Your Mind's Made Up - Lyrics, from the movie 'Once'

Once_2 When Your Mind's Made Up, Lyrics by Glen Hansard & Marketa Irglova
Featured in the motion picture Once

So, if you want something
And you call, call
Then I'll come running
To fight, and I'll be at your door
When there's something worth running for

When your mind's made up
When your mind's made up
There's no point trying to change it
When your mind's made up
When your mind's made up
There's no point trying to stop it

You see, you're just like everyone
When the shit falls all you want to do is run, away
And hide all by yourself
When you're far from me, there's nothing else

When your mind's made up
When your mind's made up
There's no point trying to change it
When your mind's made up
When your mind's made up
There's no point even talking
When your mind's made up
When your mind's made up
There's no point trying to fight it

So, if you ever want something
And you call, call
Then I'll come running

Lies - Lyrics, from the movie 'Once'

Once_2 Lies, Lyrics by Glen Hansard
Featured in the motion picture Once

I think it's time, we give it up
And figure out what's stopping us
From breathing easy, and talking straight
The way is clear if you're ready now
The volunteer is slowing down
And taking time to save himself

The little cracks they escalated
And before you know it is too late
For making circles and telling lies

You're moving too fast for me
And I can't keep up with you
Maybe if you slowed down for me
I could see you're only telling
Lies, lies, lies
Breaking us down with your
Lies, lies, lies
When will you learn

The little cracks they escalated
And before you know it is too late
For making circles and telling lies

You're moving too fast for me
And I can't keep up with you
Maybe if you'd slowed down for me
I could see you're only telling
Lies, lies, lies
Breaking us down with your
Lies, lies, lies
When will you learn

So plant the thought and watch it grow
Wind it up and let it go

The Hill - Lyrics, from the movie 'Once'

Once_2 The Hill, Lyrics by Glen Hansard
Featured in the motion picture Once

Walking up the hill tonight
and you have closed your eyes
I wish I didn't have to make
all those mistakes and be wise
Please try to be patient
and know that I'm still learning
I'm sorry that you have to see
the strength inside me burning

Where are you my angel now
don't you see me crying?
And I know that you can't do it all
but you can't say I'm not trying
I'm on my knees in front of him
but he doesn't seem to see me
But all his troubles on his mind
he's looking right through me
And I'm letting myself down
beside this fire in you
And I wish that you could see
that half my troubles too

Looking at you sleeping
I'm with the man I love
I'm sitting here weeping
while the hours pass so slow
And I know that in the morning
I'll have to let you go
And you'll be just a man
once I used to know
And for these past few days
someone I don't recognise
This isn't all my fault
when will you realise

Looking at you leaving, I'm looking for a sign

You Must Have Fallen From The Sky - Lyrics, from the movie 'Once'

Once_2 You Must Have Fallen From The Sky, Lyrics by Glen Hansard
Featured in the motion picture Once

You must have fallen from the sky
You must have shattered on the wrong way
You brought so many to the light
And now you're by yourself
There comes a point in every fight
Where giving up seems the only way
When everyone has said goodbye
And now you're on your own

And if you need somewhere to fall apart
Somewhere to fall apart.

When the rules of Cain
The rights you made
The hours did crawl
For those to blame
The broken glass
The fool that asked
The moving arrow to stop

You must have fallen from the sky
You must have come here in the pouring rain
You took so many through the light
And now you're on your own

And if you need somewhere to fall apart
Somewhere to fall apart.

Well the ruins of man
The bloody rag
Be the fool the bull
The powdered hag
The nights that make
The rattle rag
The wolves that follow the ousted man
The falling star
The way we are
Divine
The rules that never ever multiply

You must have fallen from the sky
You must have come here on the wrong way
You came among us every time
But now you're on your own

And if you need somewhere to fall apart
Somewhere to fall apart

Well they call you saint
The basket case
The rules of thumb
You have to break
The raging skull
The rag to the bull
The nails that drag
In either hand
Well I will make
My work of that
I know this place
I know this task

You must have fallen from the sky

Leave - Lyrics, from the movie 'Once'

Once_2 Leave, Lyrics by Glen Hansard
Featured in the motion picture Once

I can't wait forever is all that you said
Before you stood up
And you won't disappoint me
I can do that myself
But I'm glad that you've come
Now if you don't mind

Leave, leave,
And free yourself at the same time
Leave, leave
I don't understand, you've already gone

And I hope you feel better
Now that it's out
What took you so long
And the truth has a habit
Of falling out of your mouth
But now that it's come
If you don't mind

Leave, leave
And please yourself at the same time
Leave, leave,
Let go of my hand
You said what you have to now
Leave, leave
Let go of my hand
You said what you came to now
Leave, leave
Leave, leave
Let go of my hand
You said what you have to now
Leave, leave...

Trying To Pull Myself Away - Lyrics, from the movie 'Once'

Once_2 Trying To Pull Myself Away, Lyrics by Glen Hansard
Featured in the motion picture Once

Breaking up in the station, a final train
I don't even know if I'll ever see you again
Is it a choice that we even have?

Bang bang down on the piano 'til I smash the keys
Listening alone with the melodies
Everything's gone and I don't know where

And the rule of thumb don't apply anymore
'Cause the house is burning....

Trying to pull myself away
I'm caught in a pattern and I can't escape
Trying to pull myself away

Lately when I get lost there's this thing I know
Even the dogs have somewhere to go
Everything comes if you just it be

Work, work, brighten the corners that will never see
Untangle the thoughts that you know what they mean
I hope that the answer doesn't come to late

And the rule of thumb don't apply on me
'Cause the table are turning

Trying to pull myself away
I'm caught in a pattern and I can't escape
Trying to pull myself away
I'm caught in a pattern and I can't escape
Can't escape

Trying to pull myself away, everything's gone
Trying to pull myself away, everything's gone
